Pick-And-Roll Playbook

(note plays will continue to be added overtime to this page)

It's important to practice these plays and experiment with different variations such as, different positioning of the players, different options for the ball handler after using the screen and timing of the screen, to suit your team's strengths and style of play.

 Play 1

  • Start by bringing the ball up the court with your point guard or ball handler.
  • After crossing half-court, have the screener (big man) set up at the top of the key or at the elbow.
  • Call for the screen using the left trigger (LT) and direct the ball handler towards the screen.
  • As the ball handler uses the screen, have the shooter (SG or SF) positioned on the weak side of the court (opposite side of the screen) to prepare for a pass.
  • As the defense commits to the ball handler coming off the screen, the ball handler can pass to the shooter for an open shot or continue to attack the basket.
  • If the defense collapses on the ball handler, the screener can roll to the basket for an easy layup or dunk.
  • If the defense covers the shooter, the ball handler can use the screen again to attack the basket or pass to the cutter (SF or PF) who will be cutting to the basket from the strong side of the court.
